Heavy fuel oil, or HFO, is extremely difficult to clean. The highly viscous nature of this product means that it cannot be fully drained from pipes using gravity. Even in warm climates, there will always be a substantial quantity of oil left inside the pipe.

To achieve an efficient HFO pipeline clean, a high sealing pig must be used. Pigtek Ltd are experts at designing and implementing pigging plans on Heavy Fuel Oil pipelines. Many of these HFO pipelines are considered unpiggable since they were never designed to be pigged. When such pipelines are redundant, they must be cleaned prior to demolition.
