Desalination and Sea Water Pipeline PiggingDesalination plants are vital for many countries where the rainfall and/or the natural supply of fresh water is insufficient to meet the needs of the population and local industry. The raw water for the desalination process is generally won from offshore via large diameter sea water pipelines. Unfortunately, these pipelines can quickly become fouled up with marine growth such as barnacles, mussels and other shellfish. This build up will quickly have an adverse effect on the performance of the pipeline since the debris collecting on the inside of the pipe will increase the friction of the water flowing through the pipeline, which will lead to more turbulent flow and the pipeline efficiency can be reduced by 50% or more within a short time frame. |
